The Rarity of a New House in London by The Gentleman Architect – Dulwich Architect (RIBA, ARB)
For most London architects, the chance to design a completely new house is rare. The city’s history, conservation areas, and dense urban fabric mean that almost every project starts with an existing building. Most of my work involves adapting and extending homes across South London - Victorian terraces, Edwardian semis, 1930s infills, and postwar houses - each with their own character and challenges.
Finding a true vacant plot is like finding gold dust, so creativity lies in transforming what already exists. Opening up, connecting spaces, and making old homes feel new again is a kind of urban alchemy.
As a sole practitioner, I enjoy the balance between the two - the quiet satisfaction of renewal and the excitement of starting something from scratch. Both keep me inspired and remind me why I chose to be an architect in London.
