The Benefits of a Silly Name (and Why I Chose The Gentleman Architect – Dulwich Architect (RIBA, ARB))

Architecture is a serious business - but that doesn’t mean an architect’s name has to be.
In a profession that can sometimes take itself a little too seriously, there’s real value in having a name that makes people pause and smile. A playful or unusual title isn’t about diminishing professionalism; it’s about being memorable.

Clients meet dozens of architects, browse endless websites, and flip through pages of planning applications. A name that sparks curiosity stands out. It breaks the ice in
conversations, creates a talking point, and can even soften what might otherwise feel like a dry or intimidating process.
Architecture is, at its heart, about creativity and imagination. A name with a bit of character signals that spirit before a client ever sees a drawing. It shows approachability while still leaving room for the work itself to speak with authority and rigour.

So, is The Gentleman Architect a silly name?
Perhaps - but in the best possible way.
It’s distinctive, a little old-fashioned, and laced with irony in an era where informality often rules. For clients, it conveys both personality and professionalism. It suggests care, refinement, and craft, while still being easy to remember.
I chose The Gentleman Architect to reflect not just the tone of my work, but the way I practise. I do everything myself - no juniors, no delegation - which means every drawing, every email, and every design decision comes directly from me. It’s a quietly personal, hands-on approach that values consistency, quality, and genuine connection with clients.
In a crowded field, those qualities matter far more than a set of initials or a generic studio name.
At the end of the day, The Gentleman Architect isn’t just a label -
it’s a reflection of how I like to work: thoughtful, personal, and distinctive.
